Like so many small men, Rennick had taken himself a wife of noble proportions who had grown mountainous in middle age. Dorby had now only to look at her to see that there was something wrong. The long channels running down her flaccid cheeks were now watercourses for tears.

‘Mrs Rennick,’ he exclaimed. ‘What’s the matter?’

‘Haven’t you heard?’ she faltered. ‘I thought that was perhaps why'

‘I haven’t heard anything. Tell me.’

‘My husband. My dear husband. He took to his bed three weeks ago. He thought it was only a chill. He wouldn’t let me send for a doctor. I d-didn’t until—until it was too late. It was pneumonia.’
